The name of this blog comes from the lyrics of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ song “Gold” from their 2012 Studio Album The Heist. It’s a song about the feeling of success that came after putting in what I can only imagine is thousands of hours of hard work.
It was a bright morning in my kitchen; my cousin and I sat at my dining table. I had just acquired Pokémon Gold Version and was attempting to pick a name for my character. My cousin chose for me. She clicked on the default name; I have been “Gold” ever since. I like the moniker. I think it suits me well, and it makes starting new games easy. I find it so interesting how those of us who have grown up with video games adopt a second name that we pick for ourselves (or in cases like my own, we receive and decide to keep using). D20, Rakasan, Donke, Modingo, and Hen are just a few of the names that people close to me have used to represent their semi-anonymous online presences. I am sure readers of this blog have their own name they hide behind when they don’t want the world to know how badly they suck at Fortnite, what they really think on Reddit, or what they sell on eBay. Or maybe, we simply want our name to be cooler than the one our parents gave us. I think Gold is cool, I certainly could have done worse as preteen boy.
This is blog where I will write when I am avoiding the work I have to do, but don’t want to get caught in the mindless scrolling that all social media apps now seem to offer. I can’t gurantee my writing will be good, family friendly, consistent, or void of hypocrisy and contridictions. I hope you enjoy it.
